Bounded Variable Logics and Counting: A Study in Finite Models
نویسنده
چکیده
Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. In this volume, the 9th publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, Martin Otto gives an introduction to finite model theory that indicates the main ideas and lines of inquiry that motivate research in this area. Particular attention is paid to bounded variable infinitary logics, with and without counting quantifiers, related fixed-point logics, and the corresponding fragments of Ptime. The relations with Ptime exhibit the fruitful exchange between ideas from logic and from complexity theory that is characteristic of finite model theory.

Finite variable logics in descriptive complexity theory
Throughout the development of finite model theory, the fragments of first-order logic with only finitely many variables have played a central role. This survey gives an introduction to the theory of finite variable logics and reports on recent progress in the area. For each k 1 we let Lk be the fragment of first-order logic consisting of all formulas with at most k (free or bound) variables. Th...
متن کاملRandomisation and Derandomisation in Descriptive Complexity Theory
We study probabilistic complexity classes and questions of derandomisation from a logical point of view. For each logic L we introduce a new logic BPL, bounded error probabilistic L, which is defined from L in a similar way as the complexity class BPP, bounded error probabilistic polynomial time, is defined from P. Our main focus lies on questions of derandomisation, and we prove that there is ...
متن کاملDecidable first-order modal logics with counting quantifiers
In this paper, we examine the computational complexity of various natural onevariable fragments of first-order modal logics with the addition of arbitrary counting quantifiers. The addition of counting quantifiers provides us a rich language with which to succinctly express statements about the quantity of objects satisfying a given property, using only a single variable. We provide optimal upp...
متن کاملHypersequent Calculi for some Intermediate Logics with Bounded Kripke Models
In this paper we define cut-free hypersequent calculi for some intermediate logics semantically characterized by bounded Kripke models. In particular we consider the logics characterized by Kripke models of bounded width Bwk, by Kripke models of bounded cardinality Bck and by linearly ordered Kripke models of bounded cardinality Gk. The latter family of logics coincides with finite-valued Gödel...
متن کاملComplexity Results for First-Order Two-Variable Logic with Counting
Let C 2 p denote the class of rst order sentences with two variables and with additional quantiiers \there exists exactly (at most, at least) i", for i p, and let C 2 be the union of C 2 p taken over all integers p. We prove that the satissability problem for C 2 1 sentences is NEXPTIME-complete. This strengthens the results by E. Grr adel, Ph. Kolaitis and M. Vardi 15] who showed that the sati...
